My deep dark secret

I have to come clean. I have a secret. It’s embarrassing, and sad. And I’m going to tell you it right now!

I don’t

know how to

change a flat bike tire.

RIGHT!!!!!! I can’t believe I just threw that out into the universe but it’s true. And embarrassing. I’m the worst triathlete EVER!! See the thing is, all my friends that I ride regularily with all know how and keep telling me they’ll show me when one of us gets a flat. But we never get them. They get them if I’m not there, and I’ve never gotten one. I live in fear that one day, during a race, I will get a flat and be stuck crying in the mud on the side of the road because I can’t fix my own bike tire. So, as a general rule, when things perplex me, I head out into the world wide web searching for answers. I found a video that de-mystifies the changing of bike tires and hopefully will stop me from turtling and crying when faced with such an obstacle in real life.

Sh*t Triathletes Say

There are so many of these videos out right now and this one totally made me chuckle.

Kettlebells

I don’t think I have really gotten into chatting about how much I am enjoying kettlebell training. There is so much more to it than just incorporating a few kettlebell rows into your workout, if you want more. I’ve got a few photos to share from training! I’m going to be getting my lifting ranks sometime soon. Which pretty much means that if I want to compete at kettlebell lifting then I can! If you’d like to have a look at the website of the place I train, check it out www.victoriakettlebell.ca
What do you think? Have you trained kettlebell lifting? Do you use kettlebells in your workouts?

ZOMBIES!

Ok, I’m just going to throw this out there…I’m SO ready for a zompocalypse it’s not even funny. I actually spend a fair chunk of time planning exit strategies and looking for weapons and just generally being prepared for the inevitable zombie takeover. When it happens, just follow my lead, I got this!! And while we were running the other day, Matt and I decided that we should start a running group where half the people dress like zombies and chase the other half, because what better motivation is there to run!? Anyhow, I swear I’m going somewhere with this. Apparently I’m not the only one with zombies on the brain because check out this run!! Run for your lives is a 5km obstacle course complete with ZOMBIES THAT CHASE YOU!!!!! They have them all over Canada and the US, however there is one in Washington on august 4th that JUST SO HAPPENS to fit right into my race schedule. It’s fate!! Go check out this race, their website is pretty rad….even better, you can actually sign up to BE THE ZOMBIES!!! Which, lets face it, I’m probably going to do.

Happy training!!

You can’t win EVERY day

A really big part of training and racing is knowing that sometimes you just aren’t going to win. It took me a long long time, and many broken bones to realize that! Today was one of those days. Davey and I went out for a run this morning, and we were both tired, I forgot my comfy running shoes so I got a massive blister…just an all around fail. So we changed our plans, ran some stairs, did some pushups and called it a day. It was just one of those days. You can’t win every day! But just because we lost today doesn’t mean we can’t win tomorrow. Plus we ran stairs and did pushups so it’s kind of a half win.

However, you know who IS winning?? My new baby horse friend Kosmo. I say baby because he’s green and untrained and turning 4, but when you’re picturing him, don’t picture him little, he’s actually quite large. He’s just the sweetest thing ever. Yesterday he went lunging in a saddle for the first time and he was so well behaved!! I’m very excited to be working with him, he’s going to be such a wonderful project. There’s something amazing about working with green horses, you really build a very special bond.

Spring Training

Well it’s that time again, when cherry blossoms are flowering and spring has sprung and race season approaches quickly and reminds me to get it together and go play outside. If you’re me, it’s also the season to go see your physiotherapist because your body hurts. So that’s what I’m up to this week. Physio, training, and working. It’s a good life! I’ve been running with a knee brace and that has been SO helpful! No knee pain this week, but my SI joints are terribly out of whack. Can’t wait for physio! Here’s a few photos from the other day when my sister and I went adventuring!!

Mudder

Well hello!! If you’re here it means you’ve made it over to the new site from the old blog! Welcome! I hope you like it here as much as I do!

Race season is fast approaching! My first little race will be the Times Colonist 10k for which I’m part of a fun little race team of co-workers and friends from downtown. After that it’s non stop through the summer. One race I’m getting really excited about is Tough Mudder!! In case you don’t know, TM is a 12 mile run with 25 obstacles designed by the British Special Forces. It’s pretty much the toughest event on the planet. I can’t wait!! There’s so many crazy obstacles, hay bales on fire, electrically charged hanging strips, mud pits with barbed wire above them….the list goes on! June 24th!! It’s happening in Whistler and I’ll be a part of it!!

Recover This

I am the queen of recovery!! Feeling great today….foot sore still, but not as bad as yesterday….quads still hating me, finding wierd aches and pains, knees, ankles….etc. But moral is good and I’m thrilled I did it. Gonna head to the gym tonight and get some stretching done. A little upper body workout sounds like just what the doctor ordered!!

owwwwww

Dinner and the evaluation for school went well. Good times! Workout was epic!! Got 20 mins into my run and Shorty showed up so off we went to workout. Bi’s and tri’s were on the agenda. We traded our favorite excercises and I MAY DIE tomorrow!! Shorty showed me a few new sweet cable exercises for both muscles groups and I got her to do some excercises on the bosu. We have two very different training styles. I tend to gravitate towards total body exercises because with all the triathlon training I don’t have time to focus on any one body part. Shorty does a lot of weight training and is more focused on training an individual muscle group in each workout. So for us to share and combine training techniques is really beneficial and a really interesting variance to my regular workout….therefore….i’m gonna be SORE tomorrow!! Horray. Did another 10 min run after our weights so that’s 30 mins running total which is about 5k. Which isn’t far enough. 10 k tomorrow and Elk Lake weds. That’s the goal!!

Running

So, I’m focused on running right now….no triathlons throughout the winter and due to my recent procedure I’m not allowed to swim for another week so I’m totally focused on training to hopefully run the Royal Victoria Marathon. Which might be pushing it. We’ll see. I was supposed to train with Shorty last night but I wasn’t feeling well. So hopefully tonight instead. I like having someone to push me because sometimes I get lazy. So, here’s the plan:

Monday: run (treadmill) weights
Tuesday: 2 horses to ride, weights, run (treadmill)
Wednesday: Elk Lake 10k
Thursday: run (treadmill), weights, climb Finlayson
Friday: 2 horses to ride, Elk Lake run
Saturday: run (treadmill) weights
Sunday: long run, Elk Lake, 2 loops
So, in theory I’m going to make it up to 20 k runs this week, which I’ll need to do if I plan on making it to the marathon. Headed to dinner with a classmate to get some school stuff done…then gym!! More later!!
