Of Boxing and Oceans

Finding a good training buddy can be a challenge, finding fun places to train can be an even bigger challenge. Fortunately for me, on my current contract, not only have I found a wonderful training buddy, but we regularly make time to train in fun places. Boxing drills on the beach in Mystery Island, Vanuatu is an amazing way to start off any day! We like to mix it up with punching drills then sprints in the sand and push-ups on rocks.

YOU!

You there! You there with that physique, that pace, that personal best. You probably have never seen me. You might be next to me on a treadmill, cycling in my peripheral, or lifting like a champ. You might even be a wave, wind, or a cheeky fast squirrel. Whether you know it or not, you are inspiring. You make me feel the need to do better. I thrive off of your success because it drives me to accomplish more. Show me what I can achieve, show me where I want to be, so I have a goal to reach. So thank you world, keep giving me the inspiration I need to work towards being the best me that I can be.

Haida Adventures

I am so very happy to be on vacation right now and back in my hometown of Masset, British Columbia. Taking advantage of the peace and quiet to write lots and do a lot of training on the beach. Distance runs in the morning and speed runs at night. Where is your vacation bliss?!

Track Run

Training is always so much more fun when you have a buddy! My ship buddy Morganza and I teamed up to create a magnificent run/track interval-style workout that is super killer. We specifically engineered this one to be done in our port of Ensenada, Mexico, because there was a running track just a few kilometers away from the ship. So convenient!! Try it with a friend! I like these kinds of workouts because you can very quickly measure your success. One week you can do a few more push-ups or laps than the previous workout. I try to always remember that even if I can’t get as far in a workout as I want, that’s ok because it means I still have challenges to overcome! Work hard play hard!!

Choose Your Own Adventure

I love a good adventure. In fact a good adventure is my favorite thing in the world. You all know how I get in slumps with training while working on the ships. Well sometimes you just have to make your own new adventure!! One of our lovely ports of call on the Carnival Imagination is Santa Catalina Island, and the city of Avalon. A gorgeous little Californian town, in which I’ve found an epic training run that I do every week. After a short tender boat ride to shore, and a warm up walk down the pier, off I go. It starts off tough with a stair climb, I haven’t counted the stairs yet, but there’s a whole bunch! Up all the stairs then up a windy curvy mountain road until you feel like you might die. At the top of the hill/mountain is the Catalina zip line adventure and then it’s back down the hill to the bottom again. At that point I do the stairs one more time then run along the coast until I feel like it’s time to come back. It’s tough and fun and a really nice change from treadmill running like I do the rest of the week! For me, It’s all about finding new adventures to keep myself motivated!!

Wine n Dine Half Marathon!

Well those of you who have been following along with Facebook or Twitter will know that the Wine n Dine Half Marathon took place last weekend and it was glorious! This race was super exciting for me. Not only did I get to run with a bunch of my old friends, but it was a DISNEY RACE!! Which of course is my favorite type of race. We all know Disney knows how to put on a show, well they certainly also know how to put on a race!! This particular race is the finale to a magnificent event that Walt Disney World puts on in Epcot, called the Food and Wine Festival. Food and Wine is pretty much the greatest festival ever. They have booths set up all over the World Showcase from different countries and you can taste different food and beverages from each booth as you wander around the park. They also have live entertainment almost every night, this year some of the highlights included Wilson Phillips, whom I did not get to see, and Hanson, whom I did indeed see!! This magnificent event goes on for just over a month and culminates in the Wine n Dine half marathon!!! The race begins at the Wide World of Sports and goes through both Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios before ending in Epcot with a giant party and much exultation! I have been looking forward to this race for months and I’ve been training hard. I did, however, have a few trepidations.

1. Running outside!! I’ve been training strictly on a treadmill for the last 7 months. How am I going to react to running on real life land, have I been training g hard enough? I try to vary my treadmill incline and speed enough to mimic land, but maybe I didn’t train correctly or enough.

2. Temperature!! I spent the last 3 months in the Baltic, training in the cold, how will my body react to the high temperature and humidity of Florida?! Especially with all the signs proclaiming ‘EXTREME HEAT WARNING!! STAY HYDRATED, THIS MAY NOT BE THE WEEKEND TO RUN YOUR BEST TIME’

3. Time!! This was a night run. Start was 10pm. Sure I do training runs that late, but my entire race history, be it marathons or triathlons, is all morning. I know how to prepare for morning races, I know how my body reacts, nights races are a whole other ball game, I’m not sure how best to prep.

So I went into the race, not expecting much, but expecting to do the best I could do. As expected, the first 3 miles were the worst. I always fight through those. Between mile 2-3, a ruthless cramp almost crippled me, but I ran through it. I love running outdoors. After the amount of discipline I’ve developed to run on a treadmill for endless miles, it was like a vacation to run outside, so many things to look at, so many people to race!! Turns out I didn’t do so badly in the training department. Once that pesky cramp worked itself out, I ran like there was no tomorrow. I felt amazing and turns out, I ran my best time ever! 2:05!! And I had a blast!!! Great success!!! And at the finish line, not only did I get a massive giant medal, but also a glass of wine!! Best. Race. Ever!!!!

In a slump

I’ll just throw this right out there. I’m not motivated….it’s the end of contract slump I think. It’s just getting really hard to run every day on a treadmill staring at the ocean. I fight to keep myself entertained with new treadmill workouts, but it is becoming very trying. The good news is that in one more week I’ll be off and in the Floridian sun! That’s right, this contract is almost over. It’s been an amazing one, but right now I’m just ready to be done. I want a day off, I want to sleep in and then get up for breakfast and go back to bed again. I want to run along the beach with a dog and then swim in the ocean, not wake up in a dark box and run on a machine. This contract has been utterly amazing and I’ve seen so many amazing things!! I do absolutely love my job and cruise ships and everything however vacation is necessary and I’m ready for mine. We docked in Jamaica yesterday, which is the 33rd country I’ve visited in the last 7 months, and I had a WONDERFUL morning outside with a colleague. Bring it on world, one more week until I can run and play outside all day long!! What are some of your tricks for getting motivated when you’re in a slump?

I am Strong

This week has been good on the motivation front. Long run Saturdays are up to 10 miles and I’m feeling amazing. When I get to that place where I need some extra motivation, I just keep repeating my new mantra in my head……I Am Strong. It keeps me going through the tough spots. What’s your mantra??

Grab a Bomb

My newest treasure from the gluten free world came to me from http://www.amazon.co.uk, tasty little energy bars called ‘ENERGY BOMB!’ (www.pulsin.co.uk). Now that we have Dover as a home port full time, I’m able to order things, which has made getting protein powder much easier (the amount of time I’ve wasted trolling around Italian grocery stores trying to find protein powder that I can read the ingredients of, I can’t even tell you!) In my last order, along with my new favorite protein powder (enriched with glutamine, best ever!!), I got some energy bomb bars to try out. The flavor I have is ‘Banana Crisp’, and it’s amazing. I’m snacking on one as we speak. They are gluten free, vegetarian, with no added sugar, no trans fats and non GMO!! I’m so happy with the ‘banana crisp’ flavor that next time I’m ordering a bigger box with more flavors to sample!! If you’re UK based, grab a few! If you’re not fortunate enough to be able to get your hands on some, maybe I’ll bring you some back in November!!

Going H.A.A.M

I feel amazing!! I killed my run and workout this morning, in excellent time. I had a few really tough runs last week that i struggled through but its all coming together this week. The 30 day challenge ended with me feeling fit and motivated, we’ve now started another 30 day challenge!! Going H.A.A.M on all my workouts, giving 110 percent and it feels sensational!!
How are your workouts this week??
